We will be starting a local Pax Christi Chapter here at the Catholic Worker House. We will have an organizational meeting on Tuesday July 6th at 7 pm at the house, located at 317 S Randolph Street, Champaign. If you are interested in social justice and equality, please join us. At the meeting we will determine possible other meeting places and times for the meetings.

Tim recently came from Georgia where he had been for 14 years and is returning to Illinois where he lived for 22. Tim has CW experience and is looking forward to getting active in house and in the community

Really Really Free Market + Food Not Bombs

West Side Park in Champaign (corner of State and University)

“The Really Really Free Market is a festival where no money is exchanged, no bartering or trading takes place. Everything is free. The community is invited to bring under-used items (like that skateboard in your attic or sewing kit you never use) and skills and services (think: free back-rubs and bike tune-ups) and give them away. Food Not Bombs will be serving free food. Everyone is welcome to a party where there’s no distinction between those that have and those in need. And of course, the event is really really free.”

We’re preparing bedrooms and continuing conversation to begin offering overnight hospitality to families, women, and children November 1. Also, we’re welcoming women to the house one day a week to use showers and other facilities, as well as have a safe and warm space off the streets. As we sort through more of how this will operate, we’ll let you know how you can get involved.

SPECIAL MASS / CELEBRATION / REFLECTION 30 YEARS OF ST. JUDE CATHOLIC WORKER SATURDAY AUGUST 29 @ ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH (612 E Park St, Champaign) Mass begins at 9am, followed by a light breakfast (9:45am). Frank Cordaro from the Des Moines, IA Catholic Worker will join us and give a history of the Catholic Worker Movement, and we’ll hear stories and reflections from the past 30 years. There will also be a time for envisioning the future. Breakfast and discussion will take place at the Oscar Romero parish center, located adjacent to the parish. Please join us in this time of celebration, reflection, and looking forward.

POTLUCK + ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION SATURDAY AUGUST 29 / 6PM @ 317 S. Join us Saturday August 29th for Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church (612 E Park St
Champaign, IL 61820) at 9am, followed by a light brunch at the Romero Parish Center at 9:45am. We’ll have a time of celebrating the 30 years of service of St. Jude Catholic Worker House volunteers and a time of reflection and discussion. Frank Cordaro, from the Des Moines Catholic Worker, will be facilitating this time.

At 6pm, we’ll host a community potluck followed by a roundtable discussion (7pm) at St. Jude Catholic Worker (317 S. Randolph St.). Bring some food and join us as Frank Cordaro talks about political resistance as an element of the Catholic Worker Movement.

The 2009 Jesus Radicals Anarchism and Christianity conference will look squarely at the various crises facing the globe—especially the financial and ecological crisis. An economic system based on unregulated, exponential, constant growth and that depends on wanton consumption is simply unsustainable. Similarly, destroying the irreplaceable gifts of creation as if our actions do not have consequences is surely a sign of madness. The question we face at this pivotal time of global turmoil is not if our human empires will fall apart, but when they will fall. And the question is how will we face it?

This year’s conference aims to be a time to think about the possibilities for the world to come and not to simply succumb to mourning. The speakers and the workshops will not only provide a much needed reality check, but also point to signs of faithfulness and hope. We want to see these current challenges as an opportunity for creativity, for alternative living, for radical sharing, for faithfulness, for a new way of being. We are living in a karios moment that will either break us or compel us to finally strive for a sane way of life. The choice is ours. We hope you will join the conversation.
